Irish Philadelphia Reader Poll

Come to Our Film Festival at the Philadelphia Irish Center

You take a huge risk when you try to describe the best Irish anything. Take pubs, for example. Lots of people think that if a joint has shamrocks, it's Irish. Or let's really stick our heads in a noose and talk about the best "Irish" music. OK, so is Bing Crosby singing "Tooralooraloora" Irish music. Hey, lots of Irish Americans think so, and are we not the Web site of all Delaware Valley Irish? So, naturally, we are not inclined to dispute the point.

Now, we're going to eally go out on a limb and impose our Irish movie preferences on you. Over the next two weeks or so, we're going to slowly, methodically (and hiding our heads under our desks) reveal to you our choices for the top 10 Irish movies. On the subject of movies, we are also inclined to take a decidedly catholic (small C) view.

We stole this idea, of course. (Or perhaps it was revealed to us in a Smithwick's-fueled dream 'round about 10:30 on St. Patrrick's night at the irish Center.) A few years back, the folks at Jameson Irish Whiskey conducted their own poll. Here's how their top 10 rounded out:

1. The Commitments
2. My Left Foot
3. In the Name of the Father
4. The Quiet Man
5. The Snapper
6. Michael Collins
7. The Field
8. Intermission
9. Veronica Guerin
10. Inside I’m Dancing

So now, it's our turn to decide. But it's also your turn. We've launched a poll, and you can cast your own vote. (The link to the survey is in the little box at upper right.)

Every time we add a new movie, we'll add it to the list, above.

Keep coming back, too. We'll have one or two surprise features.

I recently saw a good irish

I recently saw a good irish flick called "The wind that shakes the barley" Two brother fight together for the new republic. One accepts it, One rejects it & continues the fight.

Which list? Our reader poll

Which list? Our reader poll includes it. And I agree with you ... it was one of the better ones. As for the people at Jameson's, we can't tell you why Ned didn't make their list. (Too much Jameson's, maybe?) J.M.

Great list, but where's

Great list, but where's Waking Ned Devine? I know it wasn't Masterpiece Theatre but it was a great comedy.
